Sun Peaks 2010

Our Yearly trip up to Sun Peaks was wonderful! The snow was great, the hot tub was relaxing, and the martini's were delicious! I look forward to this vacation every year. This year I got to bring my sister and she loved it as much as I do. This place and snowboarding will always have a special place in my heart. I met my husand in college because he offered to teach me to snowboard and then 4 years later he proposed to me at Sun Peaks on New Years eve!

1360 stairs climbed!

Last night I climbed 80 flights of stairs in full bunker gear and SCBA. thats a total of 1360 steps! Thats how many steps I will have to climb for the stair climb. The only diffrence will be I will actually have to be on air which does make it more challenging. The only person home was my Kitty Riley, so I told her about my accomplishment and this is the response I got. I know, her excitment is overwhelming. And no she is not a 30 pound cat, she just looks gigantic in this picture.

Top of the World

Update on the stair climb training. This weekend I did the impossible (well at least what I thought was impossible) I ran/walked up mt Erie without stopping or having an asthma attack!

Saturdays run I had a really hard time. I stopped a number of times to try and catch my breath and I had an asthma attack that made me feel like I was going to leave my breakfast on the side of the mountain. I was glad I finished but it scared me that I may never be ready for this stair climb. By the time I got home I had a killer headache that advil just wouldn't take away. So I started slamming the water. Who would have thought that would help? I was dehydrated! Idiot! I guess drinking martinis the night before you run is a bad idea :)
Sunday morning I woke up feeling good. And I was not going to let this mountain get the best of me. Today the mountain loses! I was determined to give it my all. And I do have to say I was very pleased with my performance. I ran alot more than the day before and I never stopped to rest! I kept a good pace and made it up the mountain in about 40 min! The best part about it was I didn't have to use my inhaler at all! When I made it to the top I could have done back flips I was so happy. That gave me the confidence that I could do this stair climb, As long as I stay away from the martinis the night before :) This is the a picture that I took from the top of Mt Erie. The Top of the World!

Firefighter Stair Climb 2010

On Saturday, March 7, 2009 a fellow Fidalgo Island Firefighter Terry Bowen’s, life was cut short after his battle with leukemia. One year to the date on Sunday, March 7, 2010, Fidalgo Island firefighters will race up the stairs in full bunker gear and SCBA in memory of Terry Bowen. At 788 feet of vertical elevation, the Columbia Center in downtown Seattle, stands as the second tallest building west of the Mississippi. It takes 69 flights of stairs and 1,311 steps to reach the highly acclaimed observation deck overlooking the city. This year, over 1,500 firefighters from 300 different departments are expected to compete in the event, making it the single largest firefighting competition in the world!

I can't believe I am going to attempt this. I have been training since November, running stairs and then running Mt. Erie on weekends. I know I am going to be so happy that I did it when I'm done but right now I'm NERVOUS! On the day I signed up, I had a dream that I only made it 7 steps and collapsed! When I stated training, I had a dream that they changed it to a snowboarding compition and I had to snowboard up hill! Lets hope these are just stupid dreams!
